COLLEGE NAVIGATION
Whether your student is living at home and attending community college or moving across the country, college is an exciting time full of new opportunities, but also the uncertainty of students suddenly managing their everyday expectations, assignments, and tasks on their own. New portals, campus, resources, professors, academics, responsibilities, friends, and social opportunities are an enormous adjustment for any student.
This first year in college will define their college experience and journey. A student is suddenly faced with adjustments in all avenues of their life and many have lost the safety and structure that home and high school provide. A student with weak executive function skills is especially vulnerable to overwhelm and stress leading to loss of belief in themselves and poor performance in their academics.
Unique Challenges Faced by the New College Student:
- The overload of new tools and experiences in developing a knowledge and familiarity with college supports, programs, resources, amenities, and opportunities - both on and off campus.
- Parents no longer have access to check student grades and progress to ensure missteps or challenges are caught before they snowball.
- The ability to navigate, understand and utilize college platforms and syllabi which are designed to be highly independent unlike most high schools that include the support of teachers, parents, and administrators.
- Identifying priorities and balance and independently creating the routines and structure to meet expectations without compromising well being and important social opportunities.
- Understanding and successfully navigating the process for requesting and implementing accommodations.
How Will Coaching Put Your College Student on the Path to Success?
- Tour college portals with the student, navigating the system with them to help discover and become familiar with what they contain. We will do this each week (and sometimes each session) to ensure students can build a solid action plan, find announcements and messages, and meet deadlines.
- Support them in the development of organizational systems that distill information from the portal and syllabi in one location for ease of use.
- Help students, in sessions, develop proactive communication with professors and faculty through email, attending office hours, and making advising appointments.
- Encourage your student to discover and join a group or social opportunities they are interested in such as sports, theater, etc. to get involved.
- Explore classes and majors to not only impact a student’s present, but their future life goals.
- Encourage the student to develop and utilize a weekly routine/schedule which supports all the demands and opportunities of their college life.
- Support the student in the trial and evaluation of evidence based strategies and techniques to discover what works best for them as they reach toward their goals.
- Future registration success by checking deadline dates and going over classes and credits needed for major as well as, creating plan on best order and flow for classes taken.
- Finding resources to help with content they are struggling with in classes - whether tutoring, TA study sessions, office hours, or private services.
- Identifying and securing resources to support mental health on campus.
- Access and implement all software and programs needed for classes.
